Come join the UASC (Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago) at our next meeting this Wednesday, March 27th!

Our speaker is Jim Jarecki, who will be presenting on Chicago’s Scuttled Tugboats!

Boiler explosions, river collisions, fires, and abandonment due to age has lead many tugboats to be scuttled off Chicago. At least six tugboat wreck sites are known and several more known sites are also likely tugboats, but most of these have not been identified. We will discuss 25-30 tugboats that either became organic wrecks or were scuttled off Chicago. Then we will examine site maps of unidentified wrecks to learn if we can identify the wrecked tugs, or determine what work still needs to be done in order to make positive identifications.
