Among many other things, he is an archaeological adviser to the Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago and the Central Illinois Mudwater Archaeology Society and is an active tutor with the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Society. He also assists Nautilus Marine Group International’s high-resolution acoustic imaging projects as an archaeological adviser.

John Schnibben of the Central Illinois Mudwater Archaeology Society will present “The Columbia Riverboat Project”

Early on the morning of 5 July, 1918 the riverboat Columbia was returning downstream on the Illinois River from a Fourth of July excursion cruise to Al Fresco Park in Peoria, Illinois. In heavy fog, Columbia hooked a snag that holed her hull. While trying to reach a safe landing spot Columbia struck the edge of the river channel. Her superstructure collapsed and the ship sank, resulting in the deaths of 87 people. The magnitude of the disaster not only shocked the local region, it made front page newspaper headlines from New York to Los Angeles. The sinking was so significant that is effectively ended commercial excursion boat traffic on the Illinois River.

In support of the local area’s commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of the sinking, the Central Illinois Mudwater Archaeology Society began the Columbia Riverboat Project in the summer of 2017. The primary aim of the project was to attempt to locate, identify, and map any remains of the riverboat Columbia. If located, the wreck would be surveyed and an attempt made to determine of just how much damage to the wreckage has occurred over the years due to natural causes, salvaging and channel dredging operations.

See you there,

Colin Bertling
UASC President
