UASC Seminar on January 19th Has Been Cancelled PDF Print E-mail

I am sorry to inform you that this Saturday's seminar on Research and
Discovery of Lake Michigan Shipwrecks had to be cancelled. Due to
unforeseen family conflicts, our presenter will not be able to conduct
the seminar either on January 19 or 26.

I will work with the presenter in an effort to reschedule the program in
Chicago soon, possibly on a Saturday in March (either March 2, 9 or 23).

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have a caused anyone, and
hope that we'll be able to find a new date that will be suitable for
you. Thank you again for your interest and previous registration.

Meeting Minutes 30 May 2012

General

  • Approximately 33 members and guests met at 6:30 on the 8th floor of the Helix Building, 310 S. Racine at Jackson.

Guest Speaker

  • Our special guest this month is Sargent Ray Mazzola of the Chicago Police Marine Unit. Ray has been a certified diver since 1963, and has been assigned to the marine unit since 1977, during which time he has been involved in countless underwater search and recovery operations throughout the Chicagoland area, including but not limited to great expanses of Lake Michigan. I expect we can all learn a thing or two from Ray about searching for ( historical ) artifacts on the lake bottom, as well as hearing some very interesting stories of some of the searches he has been involved in and some of the interesting things he has found during his long history of diving Chicago area waters.

Bonus Presentation

  • This evening's Bonus Speaker was past UASC President, Tony Kiefer. He reviewed many of the finer points of wooden ship construction, especially as it applied to Great Lakes saiing vessels. Of special note was his primary reference work "Wooden Ship Building" by Charles Desmond. Originally published in 1919, reprints are available.
  • Tonight's meeting was conducted by our President, John Bell. Refreshments were provided by Margo and Chuck Miller.

UASC Members:

For those of you who may missed an announcement and the minutes from the November meeting, I am Bob Rushman and the new President of UASC.  Also elected at the November meeting were Rob Hughes - Vice-President, Beth Plotner - Secretary, and Julie Schiebe - Treasurer.  I'm very pleased to kick off the new year as President and even more pleased with the excellent officers who will be serving with me stewarding UASC.

The January meeting is coming up quickly on Wednesday the 29th.  As the new meeting space won't be available until March, we'll be back at Jak's Tap, 901 West Jackson, with business starting at 7:00 and the evening's presentation starting around 8:00.  Of course several members typically arrive early to get some refreshments before the meeting starts. For those that have not been to Jak's before, there is a $5 parking lot across the street, just east of Jak's, and we will be meeting in their large meeting room
in the back of the restaurant.  Make sure that you place the parking receipt on the dash of you car, otherwise it might get towed (yes this is from personal experience).
