UASC Meeting Wednesday at Jak's Tap PDF Print E-mail

Hey Everybody,

The October UASC meeting will be this Wednesday, October 30th, at Jak's
Tap, 901 West Jackson, a few blocks east of our past regular meeting
location. Business should start at 7:00, our Guest Speaker around 8:00
and I'm sure many will arrive early in time to get some snacks or even
dinner before the meeting. For those who have not been there before,
there is a $5 parking lot just east of Jak's, on the north side of
Jackson. See for maps, menus, and other information.

This month's Guest Speaker will be Patrick T. McBriarty, author of the
recently published book "Chicago River Bridges". This is an excellently
researched 330-page hardcover book, eight years in the making, and the
winner of the 2013 Henry N. Barkhausen Award for original research on
Great Lakes Maritime History.

Meeting Minutes 30 May 2012

  • Approximately 33 members and guests met at 6:30 on the 8th floor of the Helix Building, 310 S. Racine at Jackson.

Guest Speaker

  • Our special guest this month is Sargent Ray Mazzola of the Chicago Police Marine Unit. Ray has been a certified diver since 1963, and has been assigned to the marine unit since 1977, during which time he has been involved in countless underwater search and recovery operations throughout the Chicagoland area, including but not limited to great expanses of Lake Michigan. I expect we can all learn a thing or two from Ray about searching for ( historical ) artifacts on the lake bottom, as well as hearing some very interesting stories of some of the searches he has been involved in and some of the interesting things he has found during his long history of diving Chicago area waters.

Bonus Presentation

  • This evening's Bonus Speaker was past UASC President, Tony Kiefer. He reviewed many of the finer points of wooden ship construction, especially as it applied to Great Lakes saiing vessels. Of special note was his primary reference work "Wooden Ship Building" by Charles Desmond. Originally published in 1919, reprints are available.
  • Tonight's meeting was conducted by our President, John Bell. Refreshments were provided by Margo and Chuck Miller.

Meeting Wednesday 31 July at 7:00 PDF Print E-mail

Hey Everybody,

Sorry for the short notice, but the next UASC meeting is this Wednesday
31 July, at the Chicago Maritime Society Museum, on the 6th floor of the
Helix / LifeStorage building, 310 S. Racine at Jackson. As usual, light
refreshments will start at 6:30, business at 7:00, and the main speaker
at around 8:00.

This month's speaker will be our very own John Gerty, speaking on the
Wooden Boat Show that was held recently at Mystic Seaport Museum in
Mystic, Connecticut. Mystic is one of the premier maritime museums in
the country. It has an active restoration and reproduction boatyard;
displays include docked steam and sailing ships; work boats; plus dozens
of buildings containing static displays of boats, models and historic
artifacts. The wooden boats which were the focus of the boat show
comprise vessels of all shapes and sizes, made by both professional boat
shops and individual builders. John's presentation will focus primarily
on the museum's holdings, but will also cover some of the other wooden
boats entered for the boat show.

If you have any items that you would like added to the agenda, please
let me know, particularly if you have materials to display on the screen
as part of the discussion.

I believe there is at least one and possibly two volunteers to help with
refreshments this month, but still some room for additional help, so if
you would like to help out with refreshments, either this month or some
other month, please contact Dan Kasberger,  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thanks, and hope to see you on Wednesday,
