12TH STREET BEACH WRECK

Due to reduced water levels in
Lake Michigan, the remains of
of a ship were uncovered at the
northeast corner of Chicago's
12th Street Beach adjacent to
the Adler Planetarium.

Shedd Aquarium staffer Roger Klocek
came upon the remains in summer 2003
and alerted the Underwater Archeological
Society of Chicago.

UASC member Jim Jarecki
(shown here in the red cap)
has spearheaded an investigational
survey of these remains.
In addition to gaining knowledge
of this ship, it is a great opportunity
to acquire archeological skills.

Looking westward toward the bow.

A wider view along the port side.

The surveying was slowed by the summer
crowds and by changing conditions.
Depending on the wind and the weather,
the remains have been partially submerged.

Starboard side remains, looking eastward.

These photos were shot by Bob Gadbois
in late December 2003.
